Abstract
A series sddddof experiment was conduced to evaluate the effect of some selected metal ions on radical productions by hydrogen peroxide and paraquat which has been widely used as a herbicide.
Radical production was indirectly measured with the amount of ethylene produced by the reaction of methional with radicals, using gas chromatography equipped with headspace sampler.
The following results were obtained .
When methional was added th hydrogen peroxide with varying concentrations and at varying reaction times, ethylene production was proportional to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and to the duration of reaction time.
When paraquat was added to hydrogen peroxide, radical production increased as paraquat concentration increased. At low concentrations, radical production was proportional to paraquat concentrations and, however, shown little increase at high
concentrations. It showed a similer pattern of typical enzyme reactio.
When some selected metal ions were added to hydrogen peroxide, cupric ion showed remarkable increase in radical production but other ions inhibited radical production.
A similar result was obtained during the addition of both metal ions and paraquat to hydrogen peroxide.
